Freshman Science Fair
---------6/15----------posted by Ahlam A.---------------------------------
•We can help with the science fair for the freshamn classes in (i think) Feb. (im not sure if we help with that or not, but its an idea)
---------6/16 ----------posted by Lund----------------------------
We already evaluate science fair in late April or early May. Helping kids get their projects ready seems like a good idea. How would the logistics work? Would we have SNHS members help out in classes of freshmen? It sounds feasible.

Are we a part of that?

We can ask Mr. Glasenapp if he needs help. Most of the SNHS students are probably already in the Medical Science Club, but if not... •Urban Ecology Center.
Urban Ecology Center
-------- 6/16 ----------- posted by Anna S.-----------------------
As far as service regarding the environment, the Urban Ecology Center provides many different types
of volunteer opportunities including:
- Citizen science research; bird banning, monarch tagging, mammal surveys.
- Burdock brigade/weeding out invasive plants i.e. burdock, japanese knot weed, and garlic mustard.
- Land stewardship/gardening; maintain trails, clean up trash, work in the community gardens.
- Help with day time summer camps/home work tutoring for school age children.
I think it would be a great opportunity if SNHS could become involved with scientific research at the UEC. This is an opportunity to learn various methods of collecting data in the real world with scientist. The data collected is entered into nation wide data bases run by universities across the country or is used locally for UWM graduate students, this means the data collected is actually used by the scientific community. Eight monarch butterflies tagged at the UEC have completed their migratory path to Michoacan, Mexico.

Mr. Lund, to answer your questions, yes, I've participated in all the activities listed above at the UEC and I believe that all are feasible for SNHS. Today I will meet with Tim Vargo, the head research coordinator at the UEC. How much time are we willing volunteer at the UEC, an entire day of bird banning or meeting several times to work on a long term project? Is this something everyone is interested in?
--------6/16-----------posted by Mr. Lund-------------------------
Anna, have you participated in any of these UEC activities? One of my students from 2 years ago also recommended the Urban Ecology Center. If you have a contact within UEC, could you ask if there is anything that SNHS could do? We do, after all, claim to provide 30 community service hours. If you don't have a contact, I'll look one up. These activities all look really good (and potentially scientific). PS: I added graphics to your links on the link page.

We don't necessarily have to participate as a group, do we? How did you get involved, Anna? If anyone does participate, just keep a record in a logbook of your time, as outlined in the highlighted section on the top of this page. Here is a contact for the Riverside Park UEC, located behind Riverside University High School:

If anyone wants to volunteer on their own, they can just show up at either the Washington or Riverside branches of the UEC on Saturday and Tuesday mornings to work on land stewardship and the removal of invasive species. As for group SNHS project, I'll talk to Tim Vargo on finding a long term research/service project, most likely this will be monarch tagging or bird banning.

Remember to keep a log book, students. Thanks for looking into the project, Anna.

UEC Summer Camps Throughout the entire month of July and the beginning of August, the UEC will be holding one week long day summer camps at both Riverside and Washington Park. Volunteers help with registration, share their unique skills and talents with groups of campers or assist with scheduled activities such as canoeing and fishing. Contact: Sarah, x125.
